Back to the Future Film Review
By Jack Wagreich

Back to the Future is a creative, sci-fi adventure film filled with action, humor, and excitement. Michael J. Fox stars as Marty McFly, a teenager who is unintentionally sent back in time to 1955 in a Delorean, which was assembled by his mentor, Doc Brown. Unaware of the events that have occurred, he arrives into the past and must acclimate to his novel surroundings. After encountering a younger version of his father, Marty realizes that he is living during his parents’ high school experience. He meets his father, George, his mother, Lorraine, and Biff, his teenage father’s nemesis. He quickly discovers that in order to return to 1985, he must locate the younger Doc Brown to create a fuel for the Delorean to travel back to the future…

Back to the Future was an original, fresh science fiction movie released in the 1980s. E.T., The Terminator, and Blade Runner were only three of the many monumental sci-fi films released during that decade; however, Back to the Future was unlike those movies. When Marty travels into the past, he introduces groundbreaking concepts from the future which are unfamiliar to people living in 1955.

While in Lorraine’s house, he observes her family eating dinner and watching television. He approaches the table and remarks that he has already seen the episode. Lorraine’s younger brother questions him and wonders how Marty could have seen it before because it is a new program. Marty responds by saying that it’s a rerun, but Lorraine’s family conveys a puzzled look, unsure of what he is talking about. Reruns are merely one of the many concepts that Marty accidentally reveals in 1955.

At the Enchantment Under The Sea Dance, Marvin Berry & The Starlighters perform for the high school dance. Marty must have his parents fall in love at the dance, or else he will no longer exist. Marvin, the bandleader, accidentally injures his hand, and in order for the dance to continue, Marty must play lead guitar. Marty chooses to perform “Johnny B. Goode.” Although this song had not yet been composed by Chuck Berry, he decided anyway to bring the innovation into the past. It was this event that inspired Marvin to call his cousin Chuck about the new music craze. Marty McFly successfully returns to 1985; however, upon arriving at his house, Doc Brown immediately emerges in the Delorean to inform him of an issue with the McFly family in the future…

Back to the Future was one of the first classic films that I was introduced to by my father. I then recognized the exciting world that movies create, and how each character, plot, and theme enabled a safe escape. Cinema provides society with an opportunity to become acquainted with the arts in an interactive, inspiring way. Back to the Future links history, action, and comedy, which in turn, produces a remarkable film that will forever shape the landscape of science fiction movies on the silver screen.
